Location spotlight: Discover Gaborone and the wonders of Botswana at IAGR2023

Welcome to Gaborone, the capital of Botswana

As the host city for IAGR2023, Gaborone offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition. The capital city is a bustling hub of commerce, culture, and natural beauty. For those arriving early or staying after the conference, the city offers several tourist highlights:

  • Gaborone Dam: A popular spot for water sports and picnics, offering a serene escape from the urban hustle (pictured above).
  • Three Dikgosi Monument: A tribute to three tribal chiefs who played a significant role in Botswana’s independence (and the location of the Conference Gala Dinner on Wednesday 18 October)
  • Kgale Hill: For the adventurous, a hike up Kgale Hill offers panoramic views of the city.
Exclusive local tours

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Gaborone’s rich cultural and natural heritage. The day after the conference (Friday 20 October), our hosts, the Botswana Gambling Authority, have organised two exciting local tours for delegates:

  • Morning: We’ll visit the National Museum and the Thapong Visual Art Centre, offering a deep dive into Botswana’s art and history.
  • Afternoon: Experience the wildlife at Mokolodi Nature Reserve, a sanctuary for giraffes, warthogs and other native species.
Beyond Gaborone: Botswana’s top attractions

While Gaborone has much to offer, Botswana’s natural wonders are not to be missed:

  • Okavango Delta: The world’s largest inland delta, offering a unique safari experience.
  • Chobe National Park: Known for its large elephant population and diverse wildlife.
  • Tsodilo Hills: A UNESCO World Heritage site, often called the “Louvre of the Desert” for its ancient rock art (pictured below).
October climate in Gaborone

October is a warm month in Gaborone, with average temperatures ranging from a low of 17°C (63°F) to a high 32°C. (90°F). It’s the tail end of the dry season, so it’s advisable to pack light clothing and sunscreen. There is a chance of a few rainy days in October.

Immerse yourself in local culture

Botswana offers a rich tapestry of food, music, and culture:

  • Food: Try the national dish, “Seswaa,” a slow-cooked meat stew.
  • Music: Experience the rhythms of Botswana’s traditional music, including the unique string instrument called “segaba.”
  • Crafts: Don’t leave without picking up some local crafts, like intricately woven baskets, as souvenirs.
