Barclays allows customers to block payments to gambling operators

By site_editor

December 13 2018: The Telegraph and a range of other media (December 11 2018) report that Barclays has become the first UK bank to allow customers to block payments to gambling sites in an attempt to address consumer debt.

Barclays mobile banking users can now choose to block their ability to spend with certain types of retailer, in a move designed to put people struggling with addictions more in control of their finances.

The new feature could help those dealing with gambling problems to cut off their spending in betting shops and on gambling websites, for example.

Barclays has five retailer groups where customers can control their spending - groceries and supermarkets; restaurants, takeaways, pubs and bars; petrol and diesel; premium rate websites and phone lines - which blocks purchases made from these services, not the numbers themselves - and gambling websites and betting shops.
